Professional Athlete of the Week: Track and Field Athlete, and Nordic Skiier Tatyana McFadden

Tatyana McFadden is a decorated multi-sport athlete, that has become one of the most recognizable Paralympic athletes in recent years. A four-time Paralympian, Tatyana McFadden has earned 11 Paralympic medals according to the Team USA website; 3 gold, 5 silver, and 3 bronze medals. An impressive run, this is the just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to McFadden’s accomplishments.

Not only has she competed at the last four summer Paralympics Games (Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012, and Rio 2016) and one winter Games (Sochi 2014), McFadden has also had a successful career in sitting Nordic skiing. Among her career highlights, she has placed 1rst twice at the U.S. Paralympics Nordic Skiing National Championships in the 1-kilometer event, and 6th at the 2015 IPC Nordic Skiing World Championships in the 1-kilometer sprint.

Another sporting area in which McFadden has excelled is marathons, where she has routinely come in 1rst over the last 10 years, including: the 2016-2013 Boston Marathon, 2015-2013 and 2010 New York City Marathon, and the 2015-2012 and 2009 Chicago Marathon.

As her Team USA profile notes, Tatyana McFadden, who was born with spina bifida and is paralyzed from the waist down, was adopted as a child by Deborah McFadden from Russia. She grew up playing sports and competed in wheelchair basketball and wheelchair track and field at the University of Illinois.
